With more than 25 years in the IP field, Masahito Shibata leads our Trademark & Design practice with expertise in protecting brands and designs in Japan. He has extensive experience supporting global companies, SMEs, and startups in navigating Japan’s trademark and design systems.

Masa joined KIPB in 2000 to lead our IP Administration and Operations section while training for his attorney qualification. He later transitioned to focus on trademarks and designs, becoming a registered attorney in 2007. He is also an active member of INTA.

His practice spans a wide range of trademark and design matters, including prosecution, litigation, and licensing. His clients have included a famous German rock band, a household-name Japanese confectionery brand, and a major global web conferencing service.

Outside the office, Masa enjoys golf and immersing himself in all things Spanish. On weekends and early mornings, he can often be found bodyboarding at Kamakura Beach in Tokyo Bay.
